This weeks playlist is dedicated to Tony Bennett who is 86 years old today. Happy Birthday, Tony!!
1) Tony w/ Lady Gaga- “The Lady Is A Tramp” – Tony shines on this duet and Lady G shows why she’s a major star. They take this standard and make it look easy.
2) Tony Bennett – “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” – Tony’s signature song and one of the most beautiful songs about a city ever written. Listen to the lyrics. For anyone who has been there you know they fit SF perfectly.
3) Tony Bennett – “Blue Moon” – Tony adds his great voice to this old chestnut of a standard. (Nice horn work too.)
4) Tony Bennett – “Rags to Riches” – This was a huge hit for Tony and has been copied by many of a crooner but none come close to Tony.
5) Tony w/ Amy Winehouse – “Body and Soul” – Amy and Tony really show how professionals use their craft in an effortless, way. I always thought Amy Winehouse was under appreciated despite her stardom, and her early death was tragic and sad. Tony later commented (and he’s a guy who knows) that she had a voice as powerful and controlled as any he had heard including Ella.
