Abe and George really look like they’re ready to party here. Ol’ Abe even had his ears cleaned for the occasion!

Welcome to the three-day weekend celebrating the joint birthdays of George “I Cannot Tell a Lie” Washington and Abraham “Honest Abe” Lincoln.   There’s a good chance they’re the first two presidents you learned about in elementary school.  I know they were for me.  Somehow we never got around to Millard Fillmore or Grover Cleveland.

It took some digging but I came up with some gems (some slightly less shiny) for your listening pleasure.

Enjoy!

  1. “Young Abe Lincoln” – Johnny Horton
  2. “Eisenhower Blues” – J.B. Lenoir
  3. “Lyndon Johnson Told the Nation” – Tom Paxton
  4. “He Was a Friend of Mine” – The Byrds
  5. “Bonzo Goes to Bitburg” – The Ramones
  6. “Funky President” – James Brown

  1. Didn’t Ry Cooder do a tune along these lines too ?

    • Tim Brosnan says:

Actually Cooder has a whole album titled Election Special which I don’t believe I’ve ever heard. Here’s a good one called “Mutt Romney Blues” about the time Ol’Mitt tied his pooch to the roof of the family wagon for a trip to the Midwest.
